Training at the Victoria Police Academy.
If you are successful in making it into a squad for training at the Victoria Police Academy you can expect to participate in a 100 day training course designed to give you the skills and knowledge to undertake the Probationary Constable's Extended Training Program (on the job training).
The Victoria Police Academy training can be compared to attending a regular school, in that, classes are structured in periods throughout the day in which you will attend classes on subjects such as:
- law
- communication skills
- I.T. (computer studies)
- Drill (marching)
- PT (physical training)
- Defensive tactics
- Firearms training
The day begins with a morning parade at 7.30am before heading off to your first class for the day with the rest of your squad. The day finishes at 4pm, and 3pm on Fridays.
You can expect to sit regular law examinations (fortnightly) as well as assessments of your operational skills development which includes the use of defensive tactics, restraint and control techniques, handcuffing, searching procedures and other assessments such as the use of O.C spray and batons.
You will also participate in practical assessments involving role players (instructors) where you will demonstrate a range of skills from tactical communications through to arrest involving restraint and control of a subject as well as giving evidence in a court of law.
Recruits live both in and out of the academy during the recruit training program and meals are available at the academy facilities. The Victoria Police Academy is an excellent facility with basketball courts, swimming pool, gymnasium, squash courts, athletics track, martial arts & boxing training areas all of which are available for use by Victoria Police employees.
